The First Gardening Weekend of the Year

Last weekend the weather was really great and we were able to do a lot of work in the garden. First we went to the garden center for some plants and other stuff that we needed. There were a lot of lovely things on display in the garden center such as this
and this (look away Carol from May Dreams Gardens), lovely colourful wellies for gardening.
When we got home we put some of the stuff we bought in the conservatory and of course within 2 seconds the cats came to check it out.
I had also bought a new apron which is quite handy when potting things up. I'm always so messy. I wanted to take a picture of my new apron and then this happened.

They're not really curious you know, honest! ;-)

After lunch the serious work started. I needed 2 more beds, one for my potatoes and one for my pumpkins, corn and beans. They are going to be next to the ornamental vegetable garden, in this spot you see here.

So quite a bit of lawn had to be removed and then some serious digging had to be done as well. Luckily I have an assistant gardener who does the heavy work for me. After a few hours of hard work this was the result.
And then it was time to relax and have a nice cup of tea and enjoy the spring garden.
On Sunday the digging of the beds continued. The weather was still fine, the birds were singing and all was well in our little haven.
I planted a lot of plants that day; clematis, arabis, pansies, and wallflowers. In a hanging basket I put pink and white pansies together with some flowering rosemary.
I also put some new food out for the birds. They eat quite a lot as we have many birds visiting our garden. This little birdcage is made so that only the small birds can get at the peanuts, not the big ones. That way, they all get their share of the food. And I think the little cage looks pretty too.
At last the two new beds were finished. It had been a lot of hard work but hopefully it will be worth it in the end. This will be the first time that I grow potatoes in my garden. Corn, beans and pumpkins I've grown before but never in 1 bed together like the native Americans ( Indians) used to do. Can't wait to see how that works out.
Here the beds are almost finished.
Apart from all the hard work there were also some fun things to do like picking my first bouquet of daffodils from the garden and putting them on my kitchen windowsill where I can can see them often. They are like a ray of sunshine, aren't they?
Then I hung up a beautiful new flowering plant in my conservatory. Isn't it pretty with all those deep red flowers?
And I arranged a big bunch of anemones in blue, pink and white and put them where they will really show off to their best advantage. And then on Sunday evening my assistant gardener and I collapsed in a heap. Hopefully next weekend it will rain (not really!).
Every gardener nurses prejudices against certain plants or flowers. It is not a bad idea to examine our own, from time to time, and to decide whether they have sufficient validity to be taken to our graves.

How I see, you and your nice helper were very busy at the weekend, too. Fine that you get the help for the very heavy concrete slabs. And beautiful gardenboots can I see again. I must go shopping desperately! Hopefully I will find the right shoe market. Please crosse your fingers for me. Have a nice evening. The picture from your cats are lovely again.

Your new veggie space is lovely. Good luck with your American Indian crop garden. My kids will be planting one at their school this year too.

I didn't look away, I stared in wonder at the flowered boots. I think I'll get some and take a picture of me wearing them. Wouldn't that be something!

Another name for the garden with corn, beans and pumpkins (or squash) is a Three Sisters garden, since each plant helps the others in some way.

I like what you are getting done in your garden, it looks wonderful.

Beautiful springtime photos. What is the plant with the red flowers in the hanging basket? The flowers remind me of a Christmas Cactus, but the leaves look different.

What a great weekend you had! The beds look great, and I think you're right about that cage. It's pretty and functional.

Those cats are something! Ours have to inspect any new or moved item in the house too. Any project going on, they must be in the middle of it.
What a busy weekend you had! The beds look ready for use. We have 2 more to add this year to the vegetable garden area.

What a great post! I enjoyed seeing the "evolution" of a garden. Also the pic of the garden center, its fun seeing the different plants and layouts of garden centers and nurseries in diferent countries.

Whew...but you did well! You made it! A garden assistant! Now that explains everything! Lol!

A bit of cat hair on any clothing add that little extra something, don't you think? I mean, I don't leave home without it. I do like aprons!

I see the pink ones...boots...are in short supply...I think you must have created a shortage...what if it's worldwide?? After your post on shoes, gardening women everywhere (maybe men, too?) are emptying the shelves...what will the rest of us do?? Save some for us (not necessarily the pink ones, however)!

I do not have a gardening assistant and I don't think I will be allowed to acquire one. Oh dear. I shall have to think about this. He does have a jumpsuit. And old flght boots (not garden ones, but we can't be picky). But, how to put a shovel in his hands??

Yolanda Elizabet...it is just getting much too hard trying to keep up here...lol!

Wonderful garden...can't wait to see it planted and the harvest!

P.S. I saw that neato around-the-tree blue bench in the previous post! I just forgot to mention how much I like it!

LG Lis

The weather was perfect for working in the garden, just the right temperature!
If the weather stays like this, many plants will start showing themself. And mowing the lawn will be a weekly job again. Nice new beds. Can't wait to see what will grow there!

Hmmm, a bench like that might look pretty good here, too. Very nice, Yolanda Elizabet.

No wonder you can wear cute shoes with that assistant helping you! You have less grass now, but the Three Sisters garden should be fun - our family grew this combination, too. Unfortunately, the raccoons got all the corn!

Hi all,

Thank you for both your amusing and informative comments.

Birgit, I hope you find a pair of pretty gardening shoes soon.

Pam, your kids and I should compare notes. ;-)

Carol, at last you've succombed to the charmes of the flowered boots. I personally love to see a picture of you wearing them. ;-)
Thanks for the info, I love the name 3 sisters garden. Last year I started growing companion plants and can't wait to see how this will work out.

Entangled, the name of the plant is Aeschynanthus twister. If you click on the picture you'll see the twisted leaves of this plant a bit better.

Blackswamp_girl, I love that little peanut cage for the birds. In summertime I put a few plants in it and it looks stunning then.

Petunia's garden, I'm looking forward to your new 2 beds in the vegetable garden and what you're going to grow in them.

Nicole, that is what I like too. I love visiting blogs and watch how a garden develops throughout the years.

Gotta Garden, you crack me up everytime! BTW the 2 most important items on your shopping list are:
1) one sturdy garden assistant
2) pretty garden shoes/boots/clogs in non-pink. ;-)

Lis, I do wear a garden apron but only when I'm potting up plants, not while working in the garden itself.

Bert, the weekly and soon twice weekly mowing of the lawn I will delegate to my garden assistant. ;-)

Annie, I'm very happy with that bench. It's lovely to sit underneath the walnut tree. I'm glad I have less grass but there will be even less in the coming months. Yay!
Pity the raccoons ate all of your corn. The only Coons that we are bothered by sometimes, are our Maine Coons Dolly and Vita and they don't eat corn. ;-)

Everything is so lovely, Yolanda Elizabet! Your yard, your gardens, your floral displays, your garden center! I love the blue pots with the handles in that first picture. I have a fondness for blue pots and those are really nice.
