High As an Elephant's Eye

Oh what a beautiful morning .....
Oh what a beautiful day
I've got a beautiful feeling
Everything is going my way

Hang on, I feel a song coming on

There's a bright golden haze on the meadow
Aukje (l), Tara's sister and Jeppe, Tara's daddy

There's a bright golden haze on the meadow
And the corn is as high as an elephant's eye
SSCRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEECH!!!!!

We're coming to a screeching halt here cos The corn is as high as an elephant's eye?
Firstly, that's a bit of a stretch that whole elephant's eye thingy, isn't it? Secondly: someone was probably very high when he wrote that and it wasn't the corn. And thirdly: that must have been one great big whoppingly tall elephant. On stilts!
Because look at my corn, it's about 3 1/2 meters (11.48 feet) high now and it's still doing the climbing clear up to the sky thingy.
But it certainly is a beautiful day.

Oh, and if you didn't play the vid you missed out on Hugh Jackman belting out this song (and I do mean belting and BTW did I mention that someone should put the poor man out of his misery and tell him what a microphone is for because he's LOUD!). And he's got a perm! For some reason I don't think only the ol' Weepin' Willer is laughing at him but a little brown maverick is certainly winking her eye. ;-)

I'm still laughing Yolanda as I comment .. that was too funny .. everyone goes Ga Ga over Hugh's good looks .. but as for the talent side ?? LOL
Your corn is marvelous .. we grew Indian corn one year and it got to the 12 ft. high mark .. my goodness .. there are so many types of "high" measuring seems to be a fallen art ? LOL
Joy ;-)

I hate to be literal, but elephants are actually quite tall... and perhaps the lyrics refer to corn not quite at full height. Um, sorry! ;-) I agree all musicals must have been written by someone when high, though! LOL!

One of my favorite songs. If you get a chance, listen to James Taylor's new version on his album "Covers." It's the best!!

Oh what a beautiful hedge trimmer! Have a wonderful afternoon Yolanda E! gail ps the pups are darned cute, too!

Yolanda Elizabet Heuzen said...

* Ewa: yep, and it's still growing. I probably have to pick the corn with a ladder. ;-)
BTW I'm doing the outdoor thingy too!

Yolanda Elizabet Heuzen said...

* Lisa: Lush is the word! I'm enjoying some beautiful days and I hope you do too!

* Tyra: those pics of Tara's sister Aukje and her daddy are adorable, I agree. I never had corn that high, you?

* Joy: glad it made you laugh. High as a kite would have been very appropriate and I'm not talking about the corn. ;-)

* Monica: most elephants are about 2 to 3 meters tall so my corn is already taller than most. Only the African Savannah gets to 4 meters and my corn will probably surpass that mark as well.;-)

Sky high, me thinks. ;-)

* Jane Marie: I've heard many versions over the years but haven't heard James Taylor's yet.

* Gail: oh what a beautiful hedge trimmer, oh what a beautiful perm. Not! Give me the adamantium hedge trimmer claws any day, at least they are .... shiny!
The pups are too cute for words, you're not wrong.

Great idea - song lyrics and pictures to match. That is some corn. I have never seen any that tall. Don't fall of the step ladder when you harvest it. :)

As for the permed belter - it was a nice song anyway.

Oh this made my day Yolanda!...love the corn, the garden, the dogs... and then there's Hugh singing that good old time american show tune...what a hoot! I'm still a fan though...even with this "daggy" (as we say in OZ) rendition!
cheers,
Sophie

You obviously know nothing about talent or theater. Hugh is an enormous talent and most musical theater productions don't rely on microphones they rely on people with the talent to use vocal projection.

Yolanda Elizabet Heuzen said...

* Midmarsh John: thanks! The song just popped into my head and no wonder on such a gorgeous start of the day. And I love matching the pics to the story or the other way round. Perhaps because I think both in pics and words.

And no worries ;-) I'll hang on to that stepladder. For dear life probably as I'm scared of depths.

Permed belter, I like it!

* Sophie: so glad this post made your day. I had to look up daggy as I know some Aussie slang but not all of it. Goofy, right? I think Hugh is a hoot, he's having fun and it shows, regardless of the belting. ;-)

* Imhkki: welcome and thank you for your kind words.

But sometimes I just can't help singing when I go out into the garden and it is just busting full of lovely things to eat!

That's some mighty fine corn you've got there. I hope you get lots of good ears from it. The dogs are so very cute, posing in the meadow.

I love that song, I have belted it out on numerous occasions. Corn most certainly does get tall. I grew a variety that was every bit of 10 feet tall one year. This year I chose a short red Hopi corn because6I am growing it for corn meal. It is only about 7 feet tall, and looking very good.

Just found your blog through Sophie Munns! Love the post....Great

Chookie said...

My goodness, I"ve never seen corn that tall! What variety is it?

Yolanda Elizabet Heuzen said...

* Sarah: I know, I feel the same that's why I wrote that I felt a song coming on. Isn't veggie gardening the best? ;-)

* Em: thanks but it only looks immaculate in the pics, in real life ... not so much. ;-)

* MMD: the ears are just forming at the mo and I am curious to see what harvest I will get as I have never grow this variety before.
The dogs are adorable amidst the buttercups, I agree.

* HMH: you're not the only one who's belted it out on occasion I suspect. ;-) I only started growing corn 3 years ago and this year I was very suprised to find that this variety of corn is growing so very tall.

* Yvonne: welcome to Bliss and I'm glad you liked the post!

* Chookie: you and me both. It's Indian corn as in native americans.

Yolanda,
indeed a very beautiful day in your lovely garden.
Cats and dogs are around and the corn is still growing. Very soon you'll need a ladder to see the top of the plants.
Hope you have a good harvest!!

In Toronto it is raining with cool temperatures, fog in Guildwood and Maxi hiding under the garden table. The only dry spot in the garden.
- Cheers Gisela.

What a beautiful, entertaining and fun post! Thanks to you, I was reminded that a live production of Oklahoma was playing in a little theatre not far from here ~ so my friend and I went tonight. Sorry to say Hugh Jackman wasn't in sight, and Curly didn't have a perm ~ thoroughly enjoyed the show ~ nearly as much as I enjoyed your entry here.

A favorite song...and especially for summer! Fun post all around today... Happy weekend to you & the Team ((HUGS))

* Trudette: glad you enjoyed it!

* Gisela: thanks and I hope the weather will clear up soon. Poor Maxi, hiding under the garden table can't be fun.

* HMH: thank you very much and I'll pop over soon! It was a lovely surprise to wake up to this morning.

* Glo: what a great comment to read. I'm so glad you went and had such fun watching Oklahoma, even Hughless. ;-)

* Tracy: it's an evergreen isn't it? I don't think there are many people about who don't like this song. Have a great weekend too!

Hi Yolanda,
thank you for this song. I heard it a long time ago - certainly more than 45 years ago - on one of this old, black and very fragile grammophone records, my brother owned.

Oh! I think that as a pure poetic liberty the author of the song substituted Elephant's eye for a Giraffe's; though your corn certainly beats a giraffe's eye too.
At 11.48 feet, the author, howsoever and on whatsoever high he may be, is going to look up to your corn plant for inspiration!
Tara's family is adorable.

Is that your backyard? Your garden? I envy you.. I so, so envy you. I love spending mornings outdoors too, there's something therapeutic about it. But unlike you, I have to walk across the road to the park to get close to nature.. I sure wish for a bigger property with large gardens and backyards.

Oh, what a beautiful post,
Oh, what a beautiful morn,
You're going to need a big ladder,
To gather that beautiful corn.

Great to see your garden flourishing as ever, Yolanda, and Tara's sister and Jeppe look in fine shape too :)

Hi YE, I have to jump in here to the defense of my home state, Oklahoma. And for anyones information, we never pronounce the word, meadah! What the crap is that about! HA And that is the size of corn there too. And the wind does come sweeping down the plain, the waving wheat, it sure smells sweet then. :-)

A beautiful garden and dogs as well :) Here in Norway the rain has poured down constantly in july, but the wetherforcast promise sun in the days to come. Yes! The garden longs for light and warmth. As I write these words, the sun manage to break through the layer of clouds :D

Okay... I haven't been over here to visit in a while. Seriously. So when I saw your title I was taken back. I had no idea that you had posted a post about this song only a couple of days before I posted my post referencing the song. That is weird! Really weird! I thought I'd let you know so you wouldn't think I was copying you and spinning off your posts. So strange.
